As explained by Reddit
“There are many different sorting options on Reddit – Hot, New Top, Controversial, Rising, and best of all, the best sort. The old Best sort used upvotes, negatives, age of posts. and how long someone spent on a community figuring out which posts to show first in your home feed. But even Best could be better, and now all redditors on mobile have better, improved and more personalized sorting in their home feed that uses machine learning algorithms to constantly evolve and improve the posts you see. “
Reddit further explains that the new “Best” display will get youuse machine learning to predict what you’ll like and dislike.
“This will translate into a ranking of the posts that we think you will enjoy the most based on your Reddit activity, such as upvotes, downvotes, subscriptions, posts, comments, and so on.
As you can see in the example above, each ad will now also include an explanation for more context, such as “Because you joined …” and “Similar to …” at the top of the post. Users will also be able to flag whether they like or dislike certain posts that appear in their News Feed, to help personalize it to their preferences.
All other Reddit feed sorting options will not be affected by the change.
As noted, the process could help expand the discovery of content in the app, highlighting similar topics of interest, which ideally will encourage reviewers to spend more time scrolling. But in reality, it depends on how good Reddit’s recommendation algorithms are and how well those recommended posts and subtitles align with your interests.
But it could be a good option, and in fact, a potential first step towards more algorithm sorting on the platform. Whether they like it or not, the algorithms work to maximize content engagement, and if Reddit finds that users end up spending more time browsing their “Best” list as a result of this update, you can bet it will look at how to implement more personalized sorting in all its aspects.
Which could end up being a boost for the app as it considers the next step in the company’s expansion.
It might be worth checking out your own “Best” feed to see what Reddit thinks you might like.
The new sort option is now available in the latest version of Reddit on iOS and Android.
