How to assess whether a product may be worth investing in


Let’s talk a little bit today about some factors that I take into account when I invest or not in a product. I will talk about Lego to make it more concrete.

Since I moved, I have a warehouse with about six large shelves. The good thing is, I haven’t fully filled it yet so I can continue shopping before I need to start shipping the product on Amazon.

The problem is, I didn’t organize it too well. 20% of this inventory would already be ready to be resold but I want to wait until Christmas so that it takes a little more value. There is no rush so as Christmas approaches I will place a better order (I will have no other option).

Now let’s talk about how I chose the products that are currently in my warehouse that are 90% Lego sets.

The product is close to the EOL

The later you buy, the better because you will have a faster return on your investment. This is what I did with a Boba Fett ship when I realized that in many stores it was no longer available. At Amazon, they still had it. I think it was during our vacation in Austria last year. I bought 12 units for 112 euros and would have bought more if they had left me … ;) Currently, the Prime price is 280 euros. I will wait until Christmas when the price can reach 300-400 euros. Since I don’t have a lot of units, I assume they will all have been sold by then.

Small competition

The less competition you have in an Amazon listing, the more likely you are to get a high ROI before your investment in Lego. This is difficult to achieve because the generally popular products all of course have a lot of competition. I pay more attention to competition from resellers. You can see this when you have a product that sells for, say, $ 19.99, but there are many sellers in the list that offer it for $ 39 or more. They are investor sellers waiting for a price increase to sell with an attractive return on investment.

Sufficient demand

You can easily see it on Amazon through the sales rankings. The lower the better. For products where I don’t invest a lot, it’s not that relevant because selling 3-4 units of a Lego set is easy. Selling 100-200 isn’t so much anymore if you want to increase the bet on a set, it’s a good plan to make sure you’re really doing it with a winning product.

He has something special

Right now I’m also betting on Lego sets that are not the focus of attention for many other investors. The one that caught my eye is This is a Batman set. It’s only been on the market for a year, so it will easily take another year to reach end of life. The good thing is that whenever I have the opportunity to buy it for less than 7 euros, I buy a few units and keep putting them in the warehouse. I may already have about 40 units. I would like to have a 200-300 before it’s EOL. The special feature of this set is the yellow duck. Plus, it falls into the perfect price range. I have said this on another occasion. The suggested retail price for this set, I think, is $ 9.99. It is much easier for a product to go from $ 10 to $ 30 than from $ 100 to $ 300. I have a Harry Potter set that I bought 11 euros and sold 40 euros last Christmas. The other day, while tidying up the warehouse, I had a pleasant surprise to find 4 more units of this set than I thought I had nothing. I’ll wait until Christmas to see how it goes.

You already have my basic criteria. Nothing too surprising I would say. You see, all you need is a little patience if you want to invest and get a good return on your investment. It’s not about buying and selling in a few weeks.
