Health and well-being at work, the challenge for managers and leaders


With the introduction of telework, everything has been called into question. Everything is in the best of all possible worlds !!! But to live in this brave new world, what are managers and leaders deploying? What are the dead ends but also what are the criteria for success?

The awareness that the well being at work and health are winning criteria for the employee as well as for the company require a rigorous analysis to be established but above all not to adopt a jargon.

The employee barometer by BVA-BPI group focused on studying in depth the health and well-being at work of French employees. This survey was conducted from February 6 to 10, 2019 with a representative sample of 1,006 employees aged 15 and over.

It would appear that French employees are satisfied with their personal / professional life balance (68%) but also with their day-to-day relationships with their direct managers (66%) and their quality of life at work (66%). However, while 74% of those aged 50 and over are satisfied with their work-life balance, they are only 61% among those aged 40-49.

However, only 15% of employees see their company involved in improving the quality of life at work. A result that varies from 27% among executives to 12% among those under 30 and 8% among blue-collar workers. This difference should give rise to in-depth consideration by managers and human resources because non-involvement will ultimately prove to be the source of conflicts or quite simply to see its best employees leave the company. If employees are asked to get involved, the company needs to make some effort in return and show how much it cares about its people.

Health difficulties? The stress !

3 out of 10 employees say they have encountered health problems related to their work over the past 12 months (28%), difficulties which even affect 34% of workers. 38% of French employees often feel stress at work, a rate that reaches 41% among tertiary employees. More than 1/3 of French employees believe that their workload is too high, and in particular 41% of 40-49 year olds and 41% of public employees. Almost 1 in 2 employees (52%) have felt fatigue related to multitasking overload that he didn’t realize before. “Burn-out”: a phenomenon likely to affect 6 out of 10 employees (63%). 34% think they might be faced with it one day, 12% fear it will happen soon and 17% have already been victims.

These results speak for themselves. Stress at work is a factor that leads to burnout and ignoring that overload of work will be a source of burnout in the more or less near future is to refuse to see the reality of employees. Burnout, employees have been able to observe it among relatives, employees and they are aware that it is a factor of destruction both for the person and for his family. So human resources must be aware and find forms of organization so as not to lead employees to a dead end and therefore the company.

And the working environment?

70% of employees say they are satisfied with their workspace, but the configuration of this space introduces major disparities. If 82% of employees working in an office are satisfied with their workspace, they are only 57% among employees in open space.

But also human relations

Recognition of one’s work (54%), relationships with colleagues (52%) or hierarchy (47%) and the work environment (44%): foundations of quality of life at work for employees. It is a key factor, we will never have written it enough: the human factor is the basis of the well-being and health of employees. It is therefore the questioning of the leader and his ways of doing things that will be the source of lasting growth and that will attract the best talents to him.
