How to create a personal or professional blog from scratch

How to create a personal or professional blog from scratch

If you decide to become travel, fashion, cooking blogger or any other theme, congratulations! This is exciting, but it requires dedication, enthusiasm and above all, perseverance. Next I will explain how to create a blog from scratch and everything you have to take into account.

What is a blog?

According Wikipedia:

A blog, or in Spanish also a binnacle, is a regularly updated website that chronologically compiles texts or articles by one or more authors, the most recent appearing first, where the author always retains the freedom to publish whatever he or she deems pertinent.

This English term blog O weblog comes from the words web Y log (‘log’ in English = daily). The term binnacle, referring to the old logbooks of boats, it is used preferably when the author writes about his own life as if it were a diary, but posted on the web (online).

A blog is one of the tools that gave rise to what has been called web 2.0. Well, it allows any Internet user to create content.

Previous questions before creating a blog from 0

Before starting to create a blog about fashion, travel, cooking, digital marketing or any other topic, and since this involves a great effort, I want you to answer these questions. And if the majority answer is “yes”, go ahead! You have all my support.

Do you have something to tell?

If you have nothing to contribute, it is better not to say anything. Shooting other people’s items is very frowned upon. Being a blogger implies wanting and knowing how to present something in a clear and concise way, it is better to avoid metaphors and convoluted rhetorical figures. Therefore, if you have something to write, write it in a way that is of interest, getting readers to reach the end of the post.

Do you enjoy writing?

A blog is a hobby, not an obligation. If you don’t like writing, if you were one of those who copied even the letter to the Three Kings from your brothers, it’s difficult for you to enjoy a blog.

Do you have time?

Writing takes time. And if you intend to write at least 1 post a week (what less if you want to achieve some notoriety), it will mean that on Sunday mornings, for example, instead of being with your friends having a beer and telling them your stories, you are with your computer also telling your stories to your 2.0 friends. At first it is not the same, but over time, it is rewarding.

Do you want to do it?

Being motivated is essential, perhaps the most important thing to manage a blog. Nobody is going to thank you, a priori, nobody is going to reward you for your effort more than you. But if you are clear about your goal, and you work to achieve it, every day you will be more motivated.

Do you know about the topic?

Write about a topic that you are passionate about or interested in. If a topic does not interest you, you will not know what to write about nor will you have motivation.

Do you know how to accept criticism?

A blog is a place open to comments and criticisms, so any contribution or discrepancy is welcome.

You are patient?

The day after publishing your first post, you will enter Google Analytics and you will see that there are only 2 visits: yours, and yours from work. Not even your friends, whom you forced to enter, have listened to you. Relax, it is logical. The visits will come little by little and you have patience and know how to wait, and write content of interest.

Are you demanding of yourself?

Do not settle for writing anything. When you post something, it stays there forever within the reach of anyone. Therefore, before pressing the button to postMake sure that what you post today, you will not regret it tomorrow. This does not mean that today you expose an opinion and over the years you go back to review it and say: How could I write this! It happens to all of us, but that’s good. Signal that we have learned.

Are you constant?

A blog must be updated periodically and for this you have to be constant in the generation of content. If we want to achieve a loyal following, we have to offer content of interest frequently. Minimum 2 posts per month.

Step-by-step guide to creating a blog

Next I am going to explain step by step everything you must specify before creating your blog. Pay attention!

  1. Objective of the blog.

The first thing we have to be clear about to create a blog from scratch is the objective.
The objectives can be diverse: creation of personal branding to position ourselves as experts in an area; as an SEO strategy, to sell training or info products, to generate qualified leads … If your goal is to get rich, you better not start.

  2. Target Publicor. Who do you want to read to you?

Identify who you want to target with your blog posts and define that profile: what type of content they usually read, what they search for on the web, what inspires them, etc.

  3. Authors: Who or who will write the articles?

A blog can have one author or several authors. And these may or may not be identified. The latter is only common in some corporate blogs.

  4. Blog theme. What are you going to write about?

The theme is what we are going to talk about. In my case, digital marketing.
Yes or yes we have to be clear from the beginning. It is not worth every day to write a different one.
If we are very movie fans and we are passionate about F1, and we want to write about it; or we look for a creative formula to combine them, or better, create two blogs. But I do not recommend the latter.

  5. Name of the blog.

Determine what the blog is going to be called. Make sure it’s short, distinctive, theme-defining, and easy to remember. There are some marketing and advertising with very original names: “40 fever“, “The creative creature” Y “Not without my cookies”Are 3 good examples. Do you know them?
I opted for “A Community Manager” because it was the professional position I wanted to work for.

  6. Blog type.

A blog can be personal, professional or corporate.

  7. Publication frequency. How often are you going to post?

The frequency depends on your goals, the age of the blog, or availability.
Ideally, a minimum of 1 article a week. And if you are starting, better 2 a week. But 1 of quality is always better than 2 that do not contribute anything.

  8. Contents.

Content is the essence of a blog. It is here where we will decide on what topics and in what format we are going to publish.
From experience I tell you that content evolves in the same way that its authors evolve.

  9. Tone. How are you going to express yourself?

Tone is how we say things. As important as what we say.
In personal blogs, we usually bet on a personal tone, that is, that we listen to “the voice” of its author.
This tone can be humorous, sarcastic, critical, conversational, etc. And it will depend on your personality, the theme and who you are addressing. What is important is that it is the same in all articles.

  10. Abstract.

The excerpt is a short summary where I know what the blog is about. This information does not have to be published, but it is convenient to write it. If you want to include your blog in a directory, it will be very useful.

  11. Domain.

The domain is – according to the RAE – the ddenomination that identifies a website and that indicates its belonging to a certain category.
The most reasonable thing is that the domain matches the name of the website. And when in doubt about whether to register the .com or the .es, my recommendation is that you register both; and one redirects the other.

  12. Hosting.

To create our blog we also need to have a hosting.
Hosting is the place where our website will be hosted. The important thing to choose one is to know where your servers are located – preferably in our country – if it offers us good customer service, the space available and the price.
The cheapest is often not the most advisable. And it never hurts to ask a friend about their hosting experience.
Many companies offer “Domain + Hosting” packs. From experience, I recommend Raiola O Dinahosting.

  13. The CMS.

The CMS is a content management system that allows you to create a working environment in a hosting for the management and programming of a blog, a web page or an online store.
In the case of a blog, we will definitely go for WordPress.org.

  14. Tema o theme para WordPress.

The theme – not to be confused with the theme – is the complete design for a blog. It includes all the elements of the design (fonts, colors, etc.)
WordPress offers you free themes, but if you want to go one step further, bet on a theme that you like, even if it is paid. Remember that the visual communicates.

  15. Content structure.

Last but not least, we must define how we are going to structure the content: categories, tags, etc. We see this in more detail in the article “How to write a blog post“.

Once we have all the points defined, we will only have to access our hosting and start programming it. If this part is too complex for you, it is best to delegate this work to a Web developer.

Meanwhile, I recommend you start writing the first articles now, so that when you present it in society, it already has content. Good luck on your journey as a fashion, travel, cooking blogger…!
